Action Survival Game for NVIDIA

Resident Evil 5 for SHIELD TV is an action game and a port of the original Resident Evil 5 by NVIDIA Lightspeed Studios.

Departing From Horror to Action

Resident Evil 5 is designed to accommodate old and new fans of the franchise by continuing the cinematic plot, at the same time introduce new game mechanics. The Resident Evil or Biohazard in Japan is Capcom’s groundbreaking series in the 90s. It defined the horror survival genre for mainstream gaming. There were instances where Resident Evil attempted to experiment other genres like rail shooters, first-person shooter, and even pachinko slots. Capcom’s tried and tested horror survival formula was challenged by Resident Evil 4. The earlier Resident Evil games had tank controls where players navigate in relation to their position. The tank controls are also compounded with fixed camera angles to emphasize tension-filled scenarios, along with limited resources and ammunition. The drastic gameplay shift started from Resident Evil 4 where the camera is positioned behind the player. The camera zooms to over-the-shoulders style whenever players aim with their guns or engage with an offensive stance for close quarter combat. Players had the option to aim at appendages compared to the previous games, as well as shoot down any projectiles thrown at them. They also have to react from cinematic scenes like dodging hazards or executing finishing attacks with quick time events. This more action-packed approach was carried out until Resident Evil 6. Older fans were alienated because it somehow removed the horror atmosphere of the game.

A Recap Of Capcom’s Zombie Franchise

Resident Evil 5 begins after the tragedy of Raccoon City. The villainous Umbrella Corporation has been destroyed, at the same time, their lethal experiments were contained. Peace was temporary as new danger emerges. S.T.A.R.S. veteran and Bio-terrorism Security Assessment Alliance (BSAA) founder Chris Redfield is assigned to Africa for investigating a biological agent terrorizing a local populace of the Kijuju Autonomous Zone. The residents have been mutated into violent zombies. Chris is assisted by African BSAA agent Sheva Alomar to solve the case and hunt down the perpetrators. This action game features an A.I. assistant in the guise of Sheva. Players must cooperate with their allied A.I. to overcome obstacles, from rampaging hordes to tenacious bio-weapons. Enemies range from gangling zombies to armed and dangerous, intelligent bosses. A horde of zombies is dangerous even if they are easy to be killed individually. The game supplies players with new armaments such as VZ61 MG,  Longbow, Stun Rod, Proximity Bomb, Grenade Launcher and Gatling Gun. They can upgrade the weapons or find better ones. The action game features “Quick-Select” Inventory System where players can trade in real time ammunition, weapons, and healing items to their allied A.I. They can either play in third-person action game controls or Resident Evil 4’s controls. The secret behind Resident Evil 5 groundbreaking graphics is Capcom’s MT Framework. The game engine was used for other Capcom games like Dead Rising, Devil May Cry 4 and Lost Planet. It includes lighting effects for intense scenes, ranging from dark corners to the daylight with the dead. MT Framework capability is also magnified by NVIDIA SHIELD Android TV’s 720p HD resolution playback ability.

Reimagined Horror Game into Action Game

Resident Evil 5 for SHIELD TV deviates from the horror formula to a more action-oriented gameplay which is relatable to games like Call of Duty, Left for Dead and Gears of War. It is a decent entry for beginners who want to enjoy the Resident Evil franchise in a Hollywood style.
